ATLANTA – Concluding freshman
year at college is a major step for most teens including four young men who
otherwise might not have been able to attend college without the help of a golf
scholarship. Making the transition from high school to college can be both
challenging and rewarding and requires a lot of support from family and the
community.
Four Atlanta teens who completed
their freshman year at Grambling State University met several years ago while
learning the game of golf under an East Lake Foundation Youth Program. Home for
the summer the teens are working for the company that has supported and
encouraged them for the past two years.
Willie Brown (19), Shelton Davis
(19), Brandon Bradley (18) and Rodriquez Lowery (19) are paid summer interns for
the second consecutive year at TDC Systems Integration in Cobb County. The
firm’s President and CEO, Antonio Dozier saw the opportunity to step forward to
help the Atlanta teens even after his commitment to them as an East Lake
Foundation board member ended. Dozier willingly expanded his role as mentor to
these four teens and he continues to support the students by filling in some of
the gaps including buying books and supplies for them during their freshman year
at Grambling State University.
“Helping these young men succeed
now, I believe, will help them succeed in life as adults,” said Dozier. “I have
a lot in common with these young guys; I came from an underprivileged community
and didn’t have a lot of luxuries growing up. Education is one of the keys to
success; and when I can reach back into the community to help support our teens,
it’s a great feeling to lend a hand,” added Dozier.
TDC Systems Integration is also
participating in Atlanta’s 2007 Mayor’s Summer Youth Program. The company has
provided summer intern jobs to three metro Atlanta teens for six weeks. Interns
Regina Robinson a mass communications major at Grambling State University; Nkem
Thomas a political science major at West Georgia; and Fredrick Clark an
economics major at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) currently work in
various divisions including marketing, accounting and project planning.
